Tingling in the menopause

Menopausal symptoms: tingling, pins and needles and solutions

Hot flushes, night sweats, mood disorders…

Tingling is also a symptom that occurs regularly during and/or around the menopause, although it is much less well known. This tingling is often felt in the extremities of the body (hands, feet, legs…)

It may be a sign of hormonal imbalance or simply the result of changes in the body. This symptom, known as physical discomfort, is similar to the unpleasant sensation felt after being in a bad posture for too long.

What causes this tingling?

Tingling during the menopause can have many causes. It can be a sign of perimenopause, which is the transition period before the menopause. Other causes include low estrogen levels, high stress levels, nutritional deficiencies and circulation problems.

Hormonal disturbances are often the cause of tingling sensations, as oestrogen contributes to the health and function of the nerves. A drop in estrogen levels can lead to nerve damage and tingling.

Nutritional deficiencies can also cause this discomfort: vitamin B12 and folic acid are essential for proper nerve function.

High levels of stress can also cause tingling. During stress peaks, the body releases adrenaline and cortisol. These stress hormones can constrict blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the extremities.

But also, during the menopause, women are more prone to blood circulation problems. The legs and feet are the most affected limbs in case of poor circulation. They will swell and then become heavy and create that tingling and/or numb feeling. In some cases, the appearance of varicose veins is a sign of poor circulation.

How to counteract tingling sensations?

In general, a healthy lifestyle is enough to naturally rebalance the body. Getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, doing physical activity at least 3 times a week… are enough to counteract the tingling sensation in the body. Relaxation and stretching techniques such as yoga or pilates are also interesting for restarting a good blood circulation. Simple exercises such as leg lifts can relieve the pressure on the veins.

There are natural treatments to relieve this unpleasant feeling. Our massage body serum soothes and moisturises the body thanks to its proven active ingredients. In particular, thanks to Yam extract, which is known for its antispasmodic properties, to Ginkgo biloba with its circulatory virtues and to Magnesium extract with its muscle relaxant and soothing virtues, which helps to reduce feelings of discomfort and embarrassment.

How do I know I don’t have restless legs syndrome?

Other tingling-like symptoms exist: cramps and painful, heavy legs may mean that you are suffering from restless legs syndrome. This syndrome also occurs during the menopause and is caused by a neurological movement disorder.

To counteract this syndrome, a few changes in lifestyle may be enough.

Limiting the consumption of alcohol, caffeine and tobacco, but also wearing compression stockings are habits that should be put in place quickly to regain a feeling of lightness and get rid of this syndrome. Sleeping with your feet slightly elevated and walking at least 30 minutes a day to activate venous return is essential.

You can also massage your legs from the bottom to the top (going upwards) with decongesting and circulatory treatments such as our body massage serum

If this discomfort persists, consultation with a specialist will become necessary.
