A natural component of connective tissue, it easily penetrates the epidermis and is capable of binding large quantities of water, up to 20 times its weight.
As hyaluronic acid is a fairly large molecule, it is its salt that is preferred in cosmetics: a much smaller molecule, which penetrates the deeper layers of the skin more easily.
