What is plant keratin?
Plant keratin is a natural, vegan alternative to animal keratin, used primarily in hair care to strengthen, repair and protect hair. It comes from plant proteins, often obtained from sources such as wheat, corn, soy or rice. Composed of amino acids similar to those of keratin naturally present in hair, plant keratin easily penetrates the hair fiber, filling in weakened areas and offering better resistance to external aggressions. Due to its restructuring and protective effects, it is very popular in hair products and restorative treatments for damaged or brittle hair.
Vegan alternative to natural keratin (of animal origin), with an amino acid spectrum identical to natural keratin.
She improves the hair surface, provides flexibility, but also penetrates into the heart of the hair to provide strength and resistance, and strengthen the fiber from the inside while protecting it from the outside.
Our plant keratin or phyto-keratin comes from plants (and not of animal origin like classic keratin).
This protein makes up 95% of skin appendages (hair and nails) and is also naturally present in the skin.
Our carefully selected plant-based keratin will act as an essential nutrient for the hair bulb but also as a protective film which will restore strength and shape to the roots of the hair.
Where does plant keratin come from?
Plant keratin is produced from a mixture of proteins and amino acids extracted from plant sources, such as wheat, soy, corn or rice. These proteins are hydrolyzed, a process that makes them smaller and more easily absorbable by the hair, allowing better penetration into the hair fiber. This process reproduces the structure of amino acids present in natural human keratin, which allows plant keratin to mimic the effects of animal keratin. Eco-friendly and vegan-friendly, it has become a popular alternative in modern hair care.
Properties and active ingredients
Plant keratin is rich in amino acids that work to strengthen, protect and improve the appearance of hair. Here are its main characteristics and actions:
- Strengthening the hair fiber : The proteins and amino acids present in plant keratin help fill in fragile areas of the hair fiber, making hair more resistant to external aggression.
- Moisturizing effect : Plant keratin has humectant properties, helping to retain moisture in the hair, which improves its suppleness and softness.
- Protection against external attacks : It forms a protective barrier around the hair fiber, limiting damage caused by heating tools, UV and chemicals.
- Improved texture and shine : By smoothing the surface of the hair, plant-based keratin reduces frizz, improves shine and gives a smoother, more disciplined appearance.
- Repair of damaged hair : By filling gaps and micro-damages in the hair fiber, plant-based keratin helps repair hair that is brittle, split ends or sensitized by chemical treatments.
What are the benefits of plant keratin?
Plant keratin offers many benefits for the health and appearance of hair, especially for those that are damaged, dull or fragile. Here are the main benefits of this restorative ingredient:
- Deep repair of damaged hair : Plant keratin strengthens the internal structure of the hair, helping to repair damage caused by coloring, bleaching, heat tools and other harsh treatments.
- Increased hair resistance : By strengthening the hair fiber, plant-based keratin makes hair more resistant to breakage and split ends, which is ideal for long or fragile hair.
- Hydration and suppleness : Thanks to its humectant properties, plant keratin improves hair hydration, making it softer, supple and easier to comb.
- Smoothing and frizz reduction : By filling gaps in the hair fiber, vegetable keratin smoothes the surface of the hair, thus reducing frizz and providing a disciplined effect.
- Radiance and shine : By forming a protective barrier, it improves the reflectivity of the hair, providing shine and natural shine, even for dull hair.
Its benefits:
- Brings suppleness to hair
- Improves their strength and resistance
- Hydrates and nourishes them
How to consume vegetable keratin?
Plant keratin is used in many types of hair products, designed to repair, moisturize and protect hair. Here are the main ways to integrate this ingredient into a skincare routine:
- Shampoos and conditioners : Plant keratin is often included in strengthening and restorative shampoos and conditioners to help strengthen hair upon washing. It provides softness and suppleness without weighing down the hair.
- Hair masks : Masks containing vegetable keratin are used for more intense treatments. It is recommended to leave the mask on for 10 to 20 minutes for deep repair and visibly healthier and shinier hair.
- Styling serums and creams : For daily protection, plant-based keratin is often present in serums and leave-in creams. It forms a protective barrier against external aggressions and facilitates styling.
- Specific hair treatments : Concentrated plant keratin treatments can be applied for treatment in the salon or at home, ideal for very damaged hair. They help to intensively restructure the hair fiber.
Note : Plant keratin can be used continuously to maintain healthy hair and strengthen fragile hair fibers. However, for very fine hair, it is advisable not to overload keratin products, as this can make it heavier.
Any side effects?
Plant keratin is generally well tolerated, but certain adverse effects may occur, particularly if it is used in too large a quantity:
- Weighting of hair : Very fine hair may become slightly heavy or flat with excessive use of vegetable keratin. It is recommended to use light products or to space out applications.
- Skin sensitivity : Although rare, some people may develop mild scalp sensitivity, especially if plant keratin is combined with other agents. A tolerance test is recommended before use on the scalp.
- Excessive drying effect : Keratin can sometimes dry out hair if not combined with other moisturizing agents. It is therefore advisable to use moisturizers in parallel to maintain a good hydration balance.
- Product buildup : Due to its texture, excessive use of plant-based keratin can cause buildup on the hair, making it dull or heavy. A clarifying shampoo can be used to avoid this effect.
