What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule naturally present in the body, mainly in the skin, joints and connective tissues. This key active ingredient is known for its exceptional ability to retain water, up to 1000 times its weight, making it a key ingredient in moisturizing and anti-aging care. In cosmetics, it is used in different forms, such as high molecular weight (HPM) and low molecular weight (BPM) hyaluronic acids, which act at different levels of the skin. Its versatility and moisturizing effectiveness make hyaluronic acid essential for maintaining supple, plump and radiant skin.
Our hyaluronic acid salt serves as a humectant and hydrating active ingredient: by attracting water and retaining it, it helps keep the skin moist and hydrated.
Natural component of connective tissue, it easily penetrates the epidermis and is capable of fixing a large quantity of water, up to 20 times its weight.
Hyaluronic acid being a fairly large molecule, it is its salt that we prefer to use in cosmetics: a much smaller molecule, which penetrates the deeper layers of the skin more easily.
Where does hyaluronic acid come from?
Hyaluronic acid used in cosmetics is often obtained by biofermentation, a sustainable and eco-responsible process where microorganisms (such as lactic acid bacteria) produce this molecule. This method allows you to obtain pure, effective and environmentally friendly hyaluronic acid. Historically, hyaluronic acid was extracted from animal sources, but this practice is increasingly rare. Today, its non-animal production makes it a compatible ingredient with vegan and natural formulations, reinforcing its popularity in modern skin care.
Properties and active ingredients
Hyaluronic acid has several beneficial properties for skin and cosmetic care. Here are its main characteristics and actions:
- Intense hydration : Thanks to its ability to retain water, it helps maintain optimal hydration of the skin, thus preventing skin dryness.
- Plumping effect : It improves the density and elasticity of the skin, giving a plump and smooth appearance.
- Anti-aging : It visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles by promoting water retention in the upper layers of the skin.
- Healing and regeneration : Present naturally in tissues, it plays an essential role in skin repair and regeneration.
- Universal Compatibility : Non-irritating and hypoallergenic, it is suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive.
What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid offers many benefits for the skin thanks to its hydrating, plumping and anti-aging properties. Here are the main benefits of this flagship cosmetic ingredient:
- Long-lasting hydration : It captures and retains moisture in the skin, keeping it soft, supple and luminous throughout the day.
- Smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles : By deeply rehydrating the skin, it helps fill in wrinkles and improve the appearance of fine lines, particularly on the forehead and eye contour areas.
- Improved skin elasticity : It firms the skin by supporting the production of collagen and elastin, for a visibly more toned face.
- Reduction of redness and irritation : Thanks to its soothing and repairing effect, it calms irritated or sensitive skin, helping to restore the skin barrier.
- Suitable for all skin types : From dry skin to oily skin, it regulates hydration without weighing it down or causing shine.
Its benefits:
- Moisturizes the skin
- Promotes healing and cell regeneration
- Soothes irritation and discomfort
Comment consommer l'acide hyaluronique ?
Hyaluronic acid is mainly used topically in skincare products for its hydrating and plumping properties. Here are the main ways to benefit from this ingredient:
- Moisturizing serums : In cosmetics, serums enriched with hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights act both on the surface and in depth for complete hydration.
- Anti-aging creams : Integrated into creams, it plumps the skin and reduces visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines.
- Face masks : In the form of masks, it offers an intense moisturizing effect, ideal for dehydrated or stressed skin.
- Eye contour products : Applied around the eyes, it helps reduce dark circles, bags and fine lines.
- Food supplements : Available in capsules or powder, hyaluronic acid can be consumed for hydration and skin regeneration from the inside.
Note : To maximize the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid, apply it to slightly damp skin, followed by a cream to seal in moisture. It can be used morning and evening, alone or in addition to other treatments.
Any side effects?
Hyaluronic acid is generally well tolerated, but some side effects may occur, although rare:
- Feeling of tightness : Used alone without moisturizer, it can sometimes accentuate the feeling of dryness. Always combine it with an emollient.
- Allergic reactions : Although rare, hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid can cause redness or irritation.
- Environmental sensitivity : In very dry climates, it can draw moisture from the skin instead of the surrounding air, leading to dehydration. Additional hydration is then recommended.
- Potential interference with certain treatments : If you use specific dermatological treatments, such as retinol or exfoliating acids, hyaluronic acid may be less effective or increase skin sensitivity.
- Injectable intolerance : In the context of cosmetic injections, slight reactions such as redness or swelling may appear temporarily.
