What is calcium chloride?

Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) is a mineral salt naturally present in the human body, particularly in bones and bodily fluids. In cosmetics, it is mainly used for its moisturizing, soothing and remineralizing properties. It also intervenes in the regulation of the ionic balance of the skin and promotes the skin barrier function. Its ability to attract and retain water makes it an interesting ingredient in moisturizing care, particularly for sensitive or irritated skin.

Used at low concentrations, calcium chloride helps maintain good skin hydration and can also soothe skin inflammations. It is well tolerated by the skin and used in formulas intended for facial, scalp and body care.

Where does calcium chloride come from?

Calcium chloride used in cosmetics is generally pharmaceutical or cosmetic quality, obtained by chemical synthesis from calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. It can also come from natural mineral deposits. The form used in cosmetic products is highly purified and meets current safety standards. It does not come from animal origin and is suitable for vegan formulations.

Properties and active ingredients

Calcium chloride has several beneficial properties that justify its use in skin care:

  • Active hydration : It plays a role as a humectant, attracting water to the upper layers of the skin to maintain good hydration.
  • Skin soothing : It can help reduce feelings of irritation, tightness or itching, especially in cases of reactive skin.
  • Remineralization : Calcium is an essential element for cellular regeneration, and its localized intake supports the overall health of the epidermis.
  • Strengthening the skin barrier : It contributes to the cohesion of the cells of the epidermis, strengthening the natural barrier function of the skin.

What are the benefits of calcium chloride?

  • Improves hydration and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
  • Soothes redness, irritation and inflammation.
  • Supports skin regeneration, particularly after external aggression (wind, cold, stripping products).
  • Helps balance sensitive skin prone to skin reactions.
  • Contributes to a more even complexion and smoother skin texture.

Its benefits:

  • Hydrates the skin and strengthens the skin barrier
  • Soothes feelings of discomfort and dryness
  • Provides calcium to support cell regeneration

How to use calcium chloride?

Calcium chloride is included in various types of topical treatments:

  • Moisturizing milks and lotions : to restore mineral balance and calm the skin.
  • Soothing serums : particularly for reactive skin or post-dermatological intervention.
  • After-sun care : to limit redness and promote repair.
  • Hair products : sometimes used to soothe the scalp or remineralize chemically treated hair.
  • Masks : to strengthen and refresh the epidermis.

It is rarely used alone but is part of mineral complexes or advanced moisturizing formulas. It is generally well tolerated by all skin types.

Any side effects?

Calcium chloride is considered safe and non-irritating for cosmetic use, but some precautions should be noted:

  • At high concentration, it may cause a tingling sensation or slight irritation.
  • In case of contact with eyes or mucous membranes, it may be slightly irritating.
  • Very sensitive skin : although rare, an intolerance or local reaction may occur, especially if combined with other exfoliating agents.

It is therefore important that its use is well dosed in formulas, which is always the case in regulated cosmetics.
