What is elastin? Definition and origin

Its unique molecular structure gives it exceptional elasticity: elastin fibers can stretch up to 150% of their initial length before returning to their shape, a property no other protein in the human body possesses.

From the age of thirty, the natural production of elastin slows down significantly. Sun, pollution, smoking, and hormonal fluctuations accelerate its degradation by specific enzymes called elastases. This phenomenon explains the progressive appearance of fine lines, sagging, and loss of skin bounce.

In cosmetics, the elastin used is generally of marine or plant origin, obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis to produce small fragments capable of penetrating the superficial layers of the epidermis.

Composition and active principles of elastin

Elastin is distinguished by a very particular amino acid composition:

  • Valine, glycine, and alanine: major amino acids that provide suppleness and resilience to the fiber
  • Desmosine and isodesmosine: amino acids exclusive to elastin, responsible for the cross-links that give it its elasticity
  • Hydroxyproline: shared with collagen, it stabilizes the protein's three-dimensional structure
  • Tropoelastin: soluble precursor of mature elastin, the most active form used in advanced cosmetic formulas
  • Hydrolyzed elastin peptides: low molecular weight fragments ensuring better skin penetration

What are the benefits of elastin?

Clinical studies show that regular topical application of hydrolyzed elastin significantly improves skin bounce and reduces the depth of expression lines after 4 to 6 weeks. Its action is complementary and synergistic with that of collagen.

How to use elastin

For topical use, hydrolyzed elastin is incorporated into face, neck, and décolleté care products at concentrations generally between 1% and 5%.

It is found in serums, tightening creams, plumping masks, and eye contour treatments. To maximize its effectiveness, it is applied to clean and slightly damp skin, gently patting to promote the penetration of peptides.

The combination with vitamin C, retinol, or hyaluronic acid enhances its action on skin density and firmness.

⚠️ Note: topical elastin mainly acts on the superficial layers of the dermis. For optimal and lasting results, regular long-term use is recommended.

Precautions for use of elastin

Elastin has an excellent skin tolerance profile. It is generally well accepted by all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Possible side effects:

  • Rare skin reactions: in case of very reactive skin, slight transient redness may occur during the first applications. A patch test on the crook of the elbow is recommended.
  • Allergies to marine proteins: people allergic to seafood should check the origin of the elastin used in the formula (marine vs. plant) and consult a healthcare professional if necessary.
  • Interactions with exfoliating active ingredients: simultaneous use with strong acids (high-concentration AHA/BHA) can alter the integrity of the peptides. It is advisable to alternate applications.

What is the difference between elastin and collagen?
Collagen provides the skin's structure and mechanical resistance, while elastin gives it its elasticity and bounce. The two proteins work synergistically in the dermis: collagen forms the framework, elastin the springs. Their simultaneous degradation with age explains progressive skin sagging.

Does topical elastin really penetrate the skin?
Hydrolyzed forms and low molecular weight elastin peptides can cross the superficial layers of the epidermis and interact with dermal fibroblast receptors. They act both as film-forming moisturizing agents on the surface and as biological messengers stimulating endogenous elastin production.

At what age should one start using elastin-based skincare?
