What is Propanediol?

Propanediol, also called 1,3-propanediol, is a solvent and humectant of natural or synthetic origin used in cosmetics, personal care and some food products. It is often extracted from corn through a fermentation process, making it an eco-friendly alternative to propylene glycol. In cosmetics, it is appreciated for its ability to hydrate the skin, improve the texture of products and act as a light preservative. Thanks to its mild and non-irritating profile, propanediol is suitable for sensitive skin.

Propanediol is a natural humectant, meaning it maintains the water content of a cosmetic in its packaging and on the skin. It is ecologically sustainable because it comes from green biotechnology, most often made from fermentation of corn sugar, or synthetic sugar. It has very good sensory qualities to make textures more pleasant. This humectant is compatible with organic formulations (COSMOS Standard).
