What is ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha, scientifically called Withania somnifera and sometimes nicknamed "Indian ginseng", is a adaptogenic plant native to South Asia and Africa. Used for millennia in Ayurvedic medicine, it is recognized for its balancing effects on the nervous system, its ability to strengthen the body's natural defenses, and its support for energy levels. The roots of this plant contain a variety of bioactive compounds that make ashwagandha a valuable ingredient for stress management, vitality, and overall well-being.

In [MY] Feminine balance, we use a natural, pure and organic ashwagandha extract (KSM-66), which has a very high content of withanolides (5%). The powder is obtained from whole roots, and dried using a process preserving raw quality, then carefully ground at a temperature below 42 degrees. Our Indian ashwagandha contains the most complete spectrum of adaptogenic withalonides (titrated at 5%), the main active ingredient of ashwagandha. A star plant in Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha or Indian ginseng is considered a “rasayana” = “regenerating” plant.

Ashwagandha would also be a plant particularly recommended as we age since it would reduce the incidence of several age-related diseases. (arthritis, diabetes, hypertension and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s). Thanks to its richness in antioxidants, it seems to counter the process of tissue degradation and degeneration, improve cognitive performance and regulate the immune system, particularly in cases of autoimmune diseases.

To be used ideally during periods of seasonal fatigue (fall, spring).

ANSES recently published its conclusions regarding the use of Ashwagandha in food supplements, suspecting possible adverse effects on the thyroid. However, between 2005 and 2022 (17 years), only two clinical cases reported such effects, with a return to normal after stopping Ashwagandha consumption. One of the two cases concerned the cessation of thyroid treatment.

On the other hand, theAshwagandha used in our [MY] Feminine Balance Essentials supplement is KSM-66®. The latter has been the subject of numerous studies and does not identify any cases of nutrivigilance.

As a precaution, in the event of thyroid treatment, it is recommended to seek the advice of your doctor.

Where does ashwagandha come from?

Ashwagandha is native to India, where it is widely grown in semi-arid regions. It also grows in North Africa and parts of the Middle East. For thousands of years, it has occupied an important place in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is used to strengthen vitality and resistance to stress. The term "ashwagandha"comes from Sanskrit and means"horse smell ", a reference to its unique smell and the belief that it imparts horse-like strength and vigor.

Today, ashwagandha is cultivated in several countries to meet the growing demand for natural dietary supplements, and it is particularly prized for its adaptogenic effects.

Properties and active ingredients

The roots of ashwagandha contain several active ingredients which give it its therapeutic properties. The main active components are withanolides, steroidal lactones with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and adaptogenic effects.

  1. Withanolides : These bioactive compounds have anti-stress and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to strengthen the immune system and manage the stress response.
  2. Alkaloids : The alkaloids found in ashwagandha are known for their calming and relaxing effects, helping to reduce anxiety and promote better quality sleep.
  3. Saponins : Known for their role in cellular protection and regeneration, ashwagandha saponins support overall health and increase vitality.
  4. Antioxidants : Ashwagandha is rich in natural antioxidants that protect cells from oxidative stress, support brain health, and help preserve energy.

What are the benefits of ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is recognized for its many health benefits, in particular for its adaptogenic action, which helps the body adapt to stress factors.

Here are its main benefits:

  • Helps reduce stress and anxiety by regulating stress hormones like cortisol
  • Optimizes the quality of sleep thanks to its relaxing effects
  • Improves brain function by increasing memory and concentration
  1. Reduced stress and anxiety : By acting on the nervous system, ashwagandha helps reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, thus contributing to a feeling of calm and relaxation. It is often recommended for people suffering from chronic stress or anxiety.
  2. Support for cognitive functions : Ashwagandha is beneficial for the brain and can improve memory, concentration and mental clarity. Its antioxidant properties also protect neurons against the harmful effects of oxidative stress, promoting cognitive health.
  3. Increased energy and endurance : Thanks to its revitalizing properties, ashwagandha is used to increase vitality and improve physical performance. It helps reduce fatigue, making it an excellent choice for active people and athletes.
  4. Immune support : Ashwagandha strengthens the body's defenses by stimulating the immune system. It helps prevent infections and better resist external aggressions.
  5. Improved sleep quality : By promoting relaxation, ashwagandha helps regulate the sleep cycle and can improve its quality, promoting deeper and restorative rest.
  6. Hormonal balance : In women, ashwagandha may support hormonal balance and help reduce symptoms related to menstrual cycles and menopause.

How to consume ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is available in several forms, which allow easy consumption and adapted to specific needs:

  • Capsules and tablets : Ashwagandha capsules or tablets are convenient for precise dosing. It is generally recommended to take 300 to 500 mg per day to benefit from its effects. The dosage may vary depending on needs and the concentration of withanolides, the active ingredients in ashwagandha.
  • Powder : Ashwagandha root powder can be added to smoothies, yogurts, or hot drinks. The average dose is 1 to 2 grams per day, but it is best to start with a smaller amount and increase gradually.
  • Liquid extracts : Liquid extracts are a concentrated alternative, allowing rapid absorption. They can be taken alone or mixed with water or juice. Follow the doses recommended by the manufacturer to avoid overdose.
  • Herbal teas and infusions : Although less common, ashwagandha infusion can be made by boiling the root in water. This mode of consumption is appreciated for its relaxing effects, particularly in the evening to promote sleep.
