What is algae oil?

Algae oil is a lipid extract obtained from microalgae, like Schizochytrium or Ulkenia, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This vegetable oil is a sustainable and vegan alternative to fish oils, providing the same benefits without using marine animal resources. It is prized for its beneficial effects on cardiovascular and cognitive health and on the beauty of the skin. Thanks to its high content of omega-3, it is used both in food supplements and in cosmetics.

Algae oil rich in omega 3 (EPA DHA) provides the essential dosage to maintain a good omega 6/omega 3 ratio. Omega 3 contributes to the good synthesis of hormones, to maintaining good mental and nervous balance and to reducing inflammation. They also have a protective role against dryness of the mucous membranes (eyes, intimate area, scalp).

In our In & Out treatment [MY] Skin and Hair Essentials, algae oil provides the essential dosage of omega 3 to maintain a good omega 6/omega 3 ratio.

Where does algae oil come from?

Algae oil is primarily obtained by cultivation and extraction of marine microalgae, which are grown in controlled environments to ensure their purity and nutrient concentration. Unlike fish oils, it does not contribute to the depletion of marine resources and does not contain the contaminants sometimes present in fish. This process makes algae oil more environmentally friendly while being rich in DHA, a essential fatty acid for many bodily functions.

The microalgae used for the production of this oil generally come from coastal regions, where they are grown sustainably. The extraction and purification process ensures high quality algae oil, rich in essential nutrients.

Properties and active ingredients

Algae oil is particularly rich in omega-3 fatty acids, but it also contains other beneficial nutrients. Here are the main active ingredients of algae oil:

  1. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) : The main omega-3 fatty acid in algae oil, DHA is essential for brain health, vision and cardiovascular system function.
  2. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) : Although less present than in fish oils, the EPA in algae oil also helps reduce inflammation and support heart health.
  3. Natural antioxidants : Some types of algae contain carotenoids like astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage.
  4. Vitamin E : This vitamin, sometimes added to stabilize oil, helps protect omega-3s from oxidation and provides additional antioxidant benefits.

Its benefits:

Algae oil is prized for its many health and well-being benefits. Here are its main advantages:

  • Reduces inflammation and promotes hydration.
  • Contributes to maintaining good mental and nervous balance.
  • Protects mucous membranes from dryness.

  1. Cardiovascular health : Omega-3s, and particularly DHA, help maintain good heart health by reducing triglyceride levels, lowering blood pressure and supporting vascular function.
  2. Cognitive function and vision : DHA plays a key role in brain health, supporting memory and cognitive functions, and promoting the development and maintenance of good vision.
  3. Reduction of inflammation : Algae oil helps reduce inflammation in the body, which may benefit people with joint pain or inflammatory conditions.
  4. Vegan alternative to omega-3 : For people who are vegan or allergic to fish, algae oil offers an effective source of omega-3 without resorting to animal products.
  5. Skin Support : Thanks to its antioxidant properties, algae oil helps protect the skin against premature aging and maintain its elasticity. It also helps hydrate the skin, making it more supple and radiant.

How to consume algae oil?

Algae oil can be consumed in different forms to benefit from its benefits:

  • Capsules and softgels : Food supplements based on algae oil are available in the form of capsules or capsules, which allow the dosage of omega-3 to be controlled. The recommended dose is generally 250 to 500 mg of DHA per day, depending on individual needs.
  • Liquid oil : Algae oil can be added directly to smoothies, salads or other cold dishes. It is best added to cold dishes to preserve omega-3s, which are sensitive to heat.
  • In cosmetics : Used in cosmetics, algae oil can be added to creams, serums or facial oils to benefit from its moisturizing and anti-aging properties. It is particularly useful for dry and mature skin, providing deep hydration.

Any side effects?

Algae oil is well tolerated in the majority of cases, but certain adverse effects may appear, particularly if it is consumed in large quantities:

  1. Digestive disorders : Like other oils, excessive consumption can lead to bloating, nausea, or diarrhea in some people.
  2. Interactions with anticoagulant treatments : Omega-3 may have a slight anticoagulant effect. People taking blood-thinning medications should consult their doctor before consuming algae oil in large quantities.
  3. Allergic sensitivity : Although rare, an allergy to algae can occur. If in doubt, it is recommended to take a preliminary test or consult a healthcare professional.
